Members of the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts who are visual artists show their work in the exhibition, a yearly tradition at Flushing Town Hall. One hundred or more works in all media. Much of the art is for sale and a portion of the proceeds benefits Flushing Council's Visual Arts programs.

Sat Sep 20th Papo Vazquez Pirates Troubadours
Special guest: Herman Olivera Latin trombonist Papo Vazquez's Philadelphian/Puerto Rican/Nuyorican roots infuse his playing with Afro Caribbean spirit and soul and the far reaching outlook of jazz. He has played with Hector Lavoe, Celia Cruz, Ruben Blades, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, and Ray Barretto. His band is hailed as a non stop Latino music machine with Congas, Timbales and cutting edge instrumental solos. Starts at 8:00 PM.

Fri Oct 3rd Steve Kroon's Latin Jazz Sextet
"Kroon is a tour de force percussionist for all seasons; his spicy Latin rhythms swing in the jazz tradition" (Ron Scott, Amstersdam News) One of today's most respected percussionists, Kroon toured internationally with Luther Vandross for over 20 years, and has performed with Guitarist Eric Gale, Bassist Ron Carter, Pianists Richard Tee and Dom Salvador, Regina Carter, Lewis Nash and Benny Carter. He is the first call percussionist for recording sessions for artists Diane Krall, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, The Temptations, and Bette Midler, and has released his third solo album "El Mas Alla". Sun Oct 12th The Moet Trio
In collaboration with Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert Series "Technically and interpretatively outstanding" (Strad) Founded in 2005, the Moet Trio shares its jubilant music making with audiences across the United States and abroad, including recent appearances at the Kennedy Center; Jordan Hall (Boston); and Virginia Arts Festival. The trio made its debut radio broadcast with live performances/interviews on WGBH in Boston. Moet is a firm advocate of outreach programs to introduce classical music to new audiences and has worked extensively with school children in Philadelphia. Starts at 2:00 PM.

Sun Nov 2nd Cuartetango String Quartet
The only string quartet of its kind to devote itself to the music of tango, Cuartetango has recently returned from a triumphant, sold out tour of Argentina and the United States. Cuartetango is a string quartet through which Leonardo Suarez Paz intends to convey all the tango rage and the aggressive nuances of tango with the mere aid of two violins, a viola and a cello. Cuartetango is the chamber band most widely used by leading composers, an analogy to what the Turtle Island String Quartet did with jazz. - Tango Today in New York - Starts at 2:00 PM.

"Extraordinary talent, equally beautiful playing her 5 string violin or singing" (Jeff Fox - Kiss FM) Vocalist and violinist Pamela Hamilton is a multi-talented performer of Jazz, Gospel and Rhythm and Blues who is equally comfortable playing Mozart or Monk. She has traveled with The Harlem Gospel Choir, Ben Vereen and "Spiritus", a NYC based Gospel group. Ms. Hamilton is on the faculty of The Brooklyn Queens Conservatory and is violinist with the conservatory's string quartet.

Fri Nov 21st The Annual NEA Jazz Masters Concert (A Song for Earl May)
"Earl May gave so much more than music" (Dr. Billy Taylor) Three recipients of the NEA Jazz Masters Award (our nation's top jazz honor), Jimmy Heath, Barry Harris and Joe Wilder, join with Benny Powell, Tootie Heath and David Wong to pay homage to late bassist Earl May who joined them all onstage at Flushing Town Hall last year. May was a protegee of Charles Mingus and a member of Dr. Billy Taylor's band. He played with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Mercer Ellington and John Coltrane. The program will feature jazz standards, ballads, and Earl May favorites. Starts at 8:00 PM.

"Meurkens is the world's leading exponent of the jazz harmonica." (Jazz Times) Meurkens is a virtuoso on both the chromatic harmonica and vibraphone and is considered the most important Jazz harmonica player since Toots Thielemans. German born, Meurkens spent years in Brazil perfecting the various styles of Brazilian music from Bossa Nova to Samba. He is joined by Helio Alves, piano; Adriano Santos, drums; and Gustavo Amarante, bass. Starts at 8:00 PM.

Sat Dec 6th Interactive Arts: Telling Tall Tales
For Families: Recommended age: 6 to adult Interactive Arts is free for members with ticket purchase to SEA-Teatro's Goldilocks (Ricitos) and the Three Bears the same afternoon at 3 pm. You can find folk tales in many different ethnic groups all over the world. Some stories, like Cinderella or Little Red Riding Hood, are told differently depending on the background of the storyteller. In this workshop, we'll take a fun look at the basic elements of familiar fairy tales, re-imagine them, and bring to life new characters and circumstances that will create a fresh tale to tell in our own neighborhood. In collaboration with Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert Series "Ethereal...transcendent...spiritual" (Allmusic.com) "Vocalist Falu breaks new ground, inspires worldwide following with India Hindi" (IndianLifeandStyle.com) East Indian born, classically trained vocalist and band leader Falu has performed as a soloist with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project and is a Carnegie Hall Musical Ambassador to NYC. With her band of the same name, she draws elegantly from Indian classical, alternative rock, contemporary pop, and electronic styles to create a tight mix of East and West, ancient and modern.
