In 2004, Flushing Council became an Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. In the coming years, affiliate status will serve as the cornerstone of an emerging, multi-dimensional partnership, enabling Town Hall to exhibit art and artifacts from across the spectrum of the Smithsonian collection, while significantly enhancing FCCA's curatorial and educational capabilities, and the scholarly content of its programs. This partnership also will enable FCCA to explore core thematic areas that, while specific to the culture of Queens, have national and global significance. These will include:
  • The impact of post-1989 immigration on the visual and performing arts in New York
  • Queens as a microcosm of cultural forces transforming 21st century urban America
  • The history of jazz in Queens, including the evolution of the Queens Jazz Trail
  • 350 years of diversity-Flushing as the birthplace of religious freedom in the Americas
  • Creativity and diversity-the community arts movement in America
