School Performance: An innovative composer, performer, violinist, and band leader, Haitian-American artist Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) melds his classical music roots with his own culture and imagination. A Civil Rights Reader is a selection of works from a collection of DBR's string quartets (no. 1-5) that serve as musical portraits of iconic figures from the civil rights era: Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Maya Angelou, and Rosa Parks.
School Performance: A classic fairy tale freshly updated to explore the importance of respecting differences and dealing with fear. Students will enjoy the cultural and bilingual English/Spanish blend of dialogue, heart-felt songs, and surprising new characters. Award-winning Teatro SEA is New York City's premiere Latino theater company for young audiences and has been presenting performances and educational programs in New York, Florida and Puerto Rico for over twenty-five years.
School Performance: The great story of Shakespeare's King Lear as told by Norris, his devoted court jester. In this one-woman tour de force, actress Susanna Hamnett plays every character to tell a very personal and poignant story that borrows from the words of "that guy William Shakespeare." Nearly Lear confounds expectations of what a Shakespeare play should be, using exuberant storytelling, poetic license, music, song and film, as well as Shakespeare's rich text.
For Families/School Performance: The cast from JHS 189 performs this Broadway classic set in a New York City mission populated by do-gooders and gamblers competing for local hearts and souls. Starts at 7:00 PM.
May
