Sat Apr 10th - Sun May 9th Exhibition: The Flushing Remonstrance: Who Shall Plead for Us?
Penned in 1657, the Flushing Remonstrance was a bold petition protesting religious intolerance. Exhibit includes historical images, documents, narrative panels and artwork inspired by the theme of freedom produced by JHS 189 art students under the direction of arts specialist Meri Ezratty. The Remonstrance exhibition is made possible by Queens Borough President, Hon. Helen M. Marshall, Arthur Flug, The Harriet and Kenneth Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives, and Queensborough Community College.
Sun May 2nd Salon Sunday: Activism in the Arts
Join us to discuss if, when, and how we use the arts as a platform for protest or dialogue and what history can tell us about how the arts were used to raise public awareness. Artists working in any discipline are invited to bring in slides and CDs of their work. Each artist is allotted a time to speak, followed by Q&A. Network over cookies and coffee. The public is always invited to meet area artists and join the discussion. Philip Read and Sing-Ying Ho, facilitators. Starts at 2:00 PM.

For Families: The New York cityscape is one of the most famous in the world. Make our Puppet NYC vibrantly alive by creating delightful fish puppets to swim in an imagined Hudson River. Starts at 2:00 PM.
Sat May 8th New Music and Traditional Repertoire from Queens College
World-renowned Chinese composer, pianist, conductor, and educator Bright Sheng’s compositions are noted around the world for their lyrical, limpid melodies inspired by the folk music of China and Chinese opera. Sheng serves as Leonard Bernstein Distinguished University Professor of Music at the University of Michigan. Clarinetist Charles Neidich appears frequently as soloist with leading ensembles, including the Saint Louis Symphony, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Juilliard, Guarneri, and Mendelssohn String Quartets, and is an ardent exponent of new music. He is on the faculties of the Juilliard School, Queens College, the Manhattan School, and Mannes College of Music. Starts at 2:00 PM.
Tue May 11th Indo-Jazz Musician Masterclass: Sunny Jain Collective
A clinic for professional musicians and college music students, led by one of the leading voices in Indo-Jazz, drummer Sunny Jain. Learn about the applications of Indian tal, rhythm cycles, as well as various rhythmic concepts, such as lay, yati, and tihai. Learn Sunny’s compositional approach to utilizing Indian raags and applications of jazz harmony to raag-based melodies. Sun May 16th Interactive Arts Workshop: Catch the Bhangra Beat!
For Families: Discover the richness of Indian culture through dance, rhythms, instruments, and language. Learn bhangra and gaarba, folk dances of India, and be introduced to the drum of Punjab, the dhol. Co-led by Sunny Jain and actress/dancer Reena Shah. Starts at 1:00 PM.
Sun May 16th World Jazz: Red Baraat
For Families: A fabulous time guaranteed for all ages! Led by drummer Sunny Jain, Red Baraat is the first and only dhol and brass band in the States. This NYC-based group plays fresh originals, traditional Punjabi songs, Bollywood numbers, and has delivered blistering performances at the Chicago World Music Festival, Lincoln Center, DJ Rekha’s Basement Bhangra, 4th Annual Droma Gypsy Festival, Joe’s Pub, India Independence Day Parade, and Barbes, as well as a live radio broadcast on John Schaefer’s Soundcheck WNYCFM 93.9, an NPR affiliate. Mon May 17th Philippine & Classical Music: 2 Ensembles!
Philippine Montessori Pre-School Instrumental & Temple Hill International School Instrumental Ensembles. Delightful performance by two stellar student ensembles visiting from the Philippines. Enjoy this concert before their performance at Merkin Concert Hall! Program includes compositions by Rossini, Brahms, Khachaturian, and Filipino composers, and features instruments such as marimba, xylophone, mettalophone, glockenspeil and angklung, an Indonesian bamboo instrument. For Families: Masterclass for professional puppeteers interested in learning non-traditional puppetry techniques from this world-renowned duo. Explore Hugo and Ines’ creative process for developing unique and engaging characters, learn mime exercises and body manipulation techniques, and develop creative approaches for conveying story and character without words.
