Born and raised in Harlem, Pucho fashioned his first set of bongos out of coffee cans. He became a fiery timbalero, working steadily at Harlem and Bronx dance halls. Pucho fused a hot Afro-Cuban rhythm section with the fresh flavors of jazz horn soloists. They "Latinized" popular bebop, ballads, blues and R&B hits by applying mambo, cha cha and descarga rhythms. Their new sound quickly caught the attention of hip dancers. Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers' records became staples of 1960's New York radio. Pucho and the band played at Carnegie Hall in 1966, and went on to help create the now classic Boogaloo sound. In the early 1990's, a new generation in the UK re-discovered Pucho's records. He reorganized the band and played the 1993 Brighton Bop. Pucho left his mark again, spawning the Acid Jazz movement. The group has since gone on to release 10 dazzling CDs. In 2003, Pucho was inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame -- joining Dizzy Gillespie as the only African-Americans to receive that special accolade. In 2009, Pucho is fiercely "old school" - but don't let that fool you; his music is lively and cutting-edge - now adding twists of hip-hop to his unique brand of Latin/Jazz/Funk. The band still proudly features four of its original members - creating exhilarating, fun and memorable grooves!
