Through Kids Eyes: Exploring the Creative Process

Apr 14th - Jun 12 2005
Open Every Day from 12pm - 5pm
Curator Cheryl McGinnis worked with artists to create a unique exhibition that draws on the instincts and curiosities of children-how they are naturally fascinated with different kinds of media, textures, colors and compositions of contemporary art and curious about the processes by which they are created.
"Through Kids' Eyes examines the process and materials used by contemporary artists to achieve their individual creative visions," explains McGinnis. "Through the incorporation of the elements of chance and risk, the process of making contemporary art will be shown to be as important as the final works, which utilize all media…from oil and pastels to 3-D glasses, pieces of tape, charcoal, plates and cups."
The artists featured in the Through Kids' Eyes exhibition included: Margaret Evangeline (aluminum), Catya Plate (interactive sensory), Zhang Hongtu (mixed media & wooden sculptural elements), Michael Kirk (charcoal), Tony Gonzalez (photography 3-D Baynan trees), Hu Bing (glass sculptures), Mary Ting (Chinese paper cut installation); Susan Hamburger (cut-out drawings), and Rebecca Riley (tape painting).
Each work was accompanied by companion pieces that will give the viewer insight into the artist's inspiration, as well as the steps that they took to create the piece. Several of the works enabled viewers to contribute to the piece, and others involved viewers in creating their own work of art.
In addition to the gallery exhibition, there were two gallery events for kids.
A hands-on opportunity for children to write stories, illustrate them with their own drawings and bind them into books.
Kids sketch selected masterpieces using different artist materials and take a tour of the Flushing Town Hall Gallery
