Sat Nov 7th - Sat Nov 21st Art Workshops: Maedeup - Korean Traditional Knotting
Create a beautiful work of art using Maedeup, the traditional Korean art of decorative knotting. Trained artisan Karen Ahn, featured in our Gift Shop, will give a demonstration and teach six of 38 basic knot types. Recommended for ages 12 and up. Maximum of 12 registrants. Click for details. Sun Feb 7th Jewelry Workshop: My Valentine!
Design & create a unique Valentine’s Day 16” or 18”necklace using Swarovski Crystals. The design will be up and down points with a contrasting color, with a choice of gold-filled or sterling wheel spacers. Top-drilled Swarovski crystal bicones will be reds and pinks. A perfect gift for yourself, or for that special someone! Workshop is led by Flushing Town Hall gift shop artist Helaine Katz of Katz Meow. Starts at 2:00 PM.

Sat Mar 6th Chinese Blue Pipa Trio
For Families: Repertory Theatre of America, Inc. production presented by Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts as part of the Lunar New Year Festival. The Blue Pipa Trio, comprised of Min Xiao-Fen (pipa, vocals); Mark Helias (bass), and Steve Salerno (guitar), transcends borders with cutting-edge music. A breathtaking virtuoso and courageous pioneer, Min blends ancient Chinese music and her own compositions with interpretations of jazz and bluegrass. Min Xiao-Fen’s work has been commissioned by The Kitchen in NYC, the Trio has performed at the JVC Jazz Festival, and recorded for Bjork’s new album. Starts at 2:00 PM.
Sun Mar 7th Bakithi Kumalo Band with Robbi K
For Families: In a Celebration of the World Cup in South Africa with Music, Grammy award-winning bassist, composer, and vocalist Kumalo possesses a unique musical style reflecting influences from around the world, including South African traditional folk, contemporary jazz, and salsa. Kumalo has collaborated with Paul Simon, Cyndi Lauper, Herbie Hancock, and Randy Brecker, and leaves on tour with “Simon and Garfunkel” following this concert. Joining Bakithi onstage is vocalist Robbi “K” Kumalo, a powerful lyric soprano and back-up singer for Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross, who for many years has been a major force in bringing a sense of the world community to children’s musical theater. Fri Mar 12th Chamber Ensemble Concert featuring Korean Musicians of NY Philharmonic
For Families: Korean principal members of the New York Philharmonic, including Michelle Kim, violin, Assistant Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic; Lisa Kim, violin, Associate Principal of the New York Philharmonic, and Eileen Moon, cello, Associate Principal of the New York Philharmonic, bring the sounds of spring to our Queens community—an unforgettable experience. Sun May 16th Interactive Arts Workshop: Catch the Bhangra Beat!
For Families: Discover the richness of Indian culture through dance, rhythms, instruments, and language. Learn bhangra and gaarba, folk dances of India, and be introduced to the drum of Punjab, the dhol. Co-led by Sunny Jain and actress/dancer Reena Shah. Starts at 1:00 PM.
Sun May 16th World Jazz: Red Baraat
For Families: A fabulous time guaranteed for all ages! Led by drummer Sunny Jain, Red Baraat is the first and only dhol and brass band in the States. This NYC-based group plays fresh originals, traditional Punjabi songs, Bollywood numbers, and has delivered blistering performances at the Chicago World Music Festival, Lincoln Center, DJ Rekha’s Basement Bhangra, 4th Annual Droma Gypsy Festival, Joe’s Pub, India Independence Day Parade, and Barbes, as well as a live radio broadcast on John Schaefer’s Soundcheck WNYCFM 93.9, an NPR affiliate. For Families: Masterclass for professional puppeteers interested in learning non-traditional puppetry techniques from this world-renowned duo. Explore Hugo and Ines’ creative process for developing unique and engaging characters, learn mime exercises and body manipulation techniques, and develop creative approaches for conveying story and character without words.
