"An astonishing vocal acrobat, Mr. de Haas combines the timbre of a pure wind instrument with a fearless but disciplined theatricality and the swinging authority of a jazz powerhouse."
(New York Times)
Obie Award winning actor and singer Darius de Haas (Broadway's "Rent", "Shuffle Along", "Kiss Of The Spiderwoman", and Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel") performs the music of Billy Strayhorn in an intimate setting, celebrating the composer's rich contribution to the Great American Songbook- Billy Strayhorn wrote "Take The A Train", "Lush Life", "Day Dream", "Chelsea Bridge", "Something To Live For", and more.
Known mainly in his lifetime as one of Duke Ellington's greatest collaborators, Strayhorn has been increasingly celebrated for his own rich contributions not only musically but also socially and as a humanitarian. An out gay Black man at a time when it was the norm to keep it hidden- particularly in the macho dominated world of jazz, Strayhorn was not only out but was continually held in the highest regard by fellow musicians and colleagues.
Darius de Haas brings his ever evolving singular musical perspective to Strayhorn's tremendous output- celebrating a composer that he sung the music of for his debut solo recording 20 years ago. (The critically acclaimed "Day Dream: Variations on Strayhorn")
Please join us for this momentous occasion of celebrating the legacy of the great Billy Strayhorn.
This event is supported in part by funding from New York City Council Member Daniel Dromm.
