Joy Suarez- Visual Arts for ELL
Joy Suarez is the co-founder of Jerry Joy Music, a musical production company focused on arts education for children in New York City Schools and beyond. Through Jerry Joy Music she has consulted with and provided teacher training to the United Nations, Central Park Conservancy, ArtsConnection and numerous schools throughout NYC. Joy is a Master Teaching Artist at Materials for the Arts (MFTA), where she designs and conducts all professional development workshops accepted by the NYC DOE After School Professional Development Program, meeting the Common Core and NYC teaching standards. At MFTA she provides innovative project-based learning techniques using reusable materials from the warehouse floor. In addition, she designs and conducts MTFA’s in school residencies with NYC DOE schools. Joy previously designed and produced Fashion In the Schools Residency working directly with designers from prestigious fashion houses as well as young designers and educators creating proposals, budgets and curricula for an intensive hands-on study of fashion through the ages and fashion of multiple cultures. Since 2010, Joy has served as a FCCA Visual Arts Teaching Artist working in school residencies and family festivals.

RESIDENCY DESCRIPTION
Story Mosaic (ELL-Visual Arts residency) In Person
This residency integrates visual arts into your curriculum, allowing English Language Learners (ELLs) the opportunity to access subject areas visually and therefore improve language comprehension. Story Mosaics will introduce literary elements (setting, character & theme) and vocabulary in order to develop English Language skills through art making. Students will create collages, mosaics and puppets, and present a culminating puppet show. For all ages!
