Flushing Town Hall's Mini-Global Mashup series continues through August 2023! Curated by acclaimed trumpeter and composer Frank London (The Klezmatics), the Mini-Global Mashup series is bringing together two amazing global music artists along with accompanists for an afternoon of music, conversation and exploration.
On September 17, 2023, Flushing Town Hall will welcome renowned composer and violinist Jason Hwang, globe-trotting pipa player Sun Li, and folk singer Tine Kindermann to take center stage for a unique mashup event!

About the Artists:
The music of Jason Kao Hwang (composer/violin/viola) explores the vibrations of his history. His compositions are often narrative landscapes through which sonic beings embark upon extemporaneous, transformational journeys. Raised during the “melting pot” era of assimilation, Hwang did not learn Chinese from his immigrant parents, only English. When his parents spoke in Chinese to each other, he would listen intently to glean meaning from the inflection, pitch, rhythm, and timbre of their phrases.
Hwang imagines this musical experience of the Chinese language as the foundation of his creative instincts. In addition, amongst his many musical inspirations are the Chinese erhu and pipa, as well as the Korean gayageum. His most recent releases, "Book of Stories," "Uncharted Faith," and "The Human Rites Trio," have received critical acclaim. In 2020, 2019, 2018, 2013 and 2012, the El Intruso International Critics Poll voted him #1 for Violin/Viola. The 2012 Downbeat Critics’ Poll voted him as Rising Star for Violin. As violinist, he has worked with William Parker, Anthony Braxton, Butch Morris, Reggie Workman, Pauline Oliveros, Steve Swell, Taylor Ho Bynum, Tomeka Reid, Patrick Brennan, Will Connell, Jr., Zen Matsuura, Oliver Lake, Jerome Cooper and others. He is a recipient of a 2023 New Jersey State Council on the Arts fellowship.

Sun Li started learning to play Pipa at age of nine. She was auditioned into Affiliated Middle School of Shenyang Music Conservatory at age of 12, then admitted to Shenyang Music Conservatory where she studied the Chinese pipa and zhongruan, both stringed instruments akin to the western guitar. In 1995, she was granted the Excellence in Performance award in the Beijing “Freedom Cup” International Chinese Traditional Instrument Competition.
After graduation, Sun Li became a member of the Central Song and Dance Ensemble in Beijing, whereupon she participated in concerts for the Fourh World Conference on Women in 1995, and performed in Japan in 1996. She was part of the Welcoming Concert for former US President Bill Clinton during his visit to Beijing in 1998.
Since 2002, Sun Li has performed with Music from China, a New York-based Chinese music ensemble, at numerous educaonal and cultural institutions. She has gone on to perform at several ensembles and festivals, including the Princeton Symphony Orchestra, 2015 Festival International Jazz Musique Actuelle with Jason K. Hwang in Victoriaville, and the 2013 Lincoln Center Festival. The New York Times has lauded her performances as “virtuosic and colorful.”

Tine Kindermann is a singer, musical saw player, and visual artist from Berlin, Germany, who has been living and working in New York City since 1993. Her recording of traditional German folk songs, “schamlos schön,” (“shamelessly beautiful”) was released by Oriente Musik OHG, and is available for download on Amazon. Featuring Marc Ribot, Lorin Sklamberg, Greg Cohen, and produced by Frank London, it was nominated for the German World Music Award and has been called “one of the best CDs of German folk music that has ever been produced” (Roland Altenburger), as well as “one of the best collections of songs I’ve heard in a long time” (Iggy Pop).
Kindermann and John Kruth founded Villa Delirium, a New York-based quintet playing mostly original new folk music, which includes Doug Wieselman, Kenny Margolis and Steven Bear.
As a visual artist she works in various media. Her artwork, which includes miniature tableaux and dioramas, video and painting, has been exhibited at Stephen Romano Gallery, the Governors Island Art Fair, RePop, Mark Miller Gallery, Equity Gallery and other galleries in New York City, as well as Neurotitan Gallery and Gallery Kurt im Hirsch in Berlin.
