The
Portraits of Asian Immigrant Families project will be presented as a public art exhibition at Rachel Carson Playground/Kissena Corridor Park, on view from September 18 to November 27, 2024. The artwork printed on multiple large banners will be exhibited along the tennis court fence near the park entrance, welcoming visitors and community members daily.
Portraits of Asian Immigrant Families portrays Asian immigrants in Queens, NY. For the project design, the artist engaged with Asian immigrant community members through interviews on their families' immigrant experiences and conducted in-depth research on the historical and societal context. The project's visual style takes inspiration from Eastern folk art traditions, such as vibrant and colorful kite designs, signifying immigrant journeys. The project aims to create more representations of Asian immigrants in contemporary art and enrich the community's cultural life.
The public art project is a collaboration between the artist and the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation.
