SCHOOL SHOWS: Nidia Góngora: Afro-Colombian Music
Mar 30, 2026 - 10:00 AM
Format: 60 minutes, in-person performance at Flushing Town Hall’s theater
Grade Levels: recommended for grades 4-8
Tickets: ALL tickets $10 per person
Nidia Góngora, the most-recognized singer from the Colombian Pacific coast, was nominated for a 2019 Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album for Canalón de Timbiquí. With over 20 years of experience as a composer and performer, maestra Góngora, as she is sometimes known, has successfully built bridges between world music genres and the traditional music of her hometown of Timbiquí, Colombia.
In our FTH School Show, students will learn the steps for the dances currulao and bunde, and move to the sounds of Colombia’s Pacific coast, all while enjoying a dynamic performance featuring marimba de chonta (wooden xylophone), the bombo (bass drum), and the cununo (drum).
In addition to her work as a musician, Góngora is a researcher of traditional music from the Southern Colombian Pacific, a region whose music has been declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. For the past 12 years, Góngora has conducted musical training with children in both school and community settings in rural and urban areas of Cauca and Valle del Cauca through the Fundación Escuela Canalón, a project that preserves and promotes the cultural identity values of this region of Colombia.
