Artist Statement

Ink Nº 8 and Surfaces Nº 3 are celebrations of the essence of materials, texture, form and space.

Ink Nº 8 looks freshly painted, as though the ink just hit the paper. While creating this painting I immediately recognized the spontaneity and perfection of the moment, how the ink exquisitely and freshly activated the page. I knew right then, the work was complete, needing no additional mark.

Surfaces Nº 3 started as a collage using corrugated cardboard and a cut up cereal box. The cardboard has a humble, warm and matter of fact quality I like, and the box added a smooth splash of yellow – as in Ink Nº 8, the collage started with a regard and enjoyment of the materials. With many pieces simultaneously in the works, I often put them aside for a time and come back later, with a fresher eye to evaluate. While I liked the collage, it called out for a modifier, a softening. I chose white paint, restyling the cardboard into more restrained, human and approachable work.
 

About The Artist

A mercurial early life influenced me to become a keen observer and collector of visual and experiential stimuli. Working fluidly across a variety of mediums, there is a childlike freedom in working with and responding to a medium or material’s essence. This allows the creative process and the artwork to unfold in an organic way. Free association is central to my process. Working intuitively always felt natural; lines, brushstrokes and forms are arranged, edited and rearranged until the final piece is revealed. While the body of work might initially appear
eclectic, there is strong underlying appreciation for balance, rhythms, proportion, harmony and deep respect for the raw materials and essential qualities of the medium.
