SCHOOL PERFORMANCE: Celebrate Holi!

FRI, MAR 17, 2023
10:30 AM

Welcome spring with Holi! Join Abha B. Roy, Srijan Dance Company, and Apoorva Mudgal Ensemble for a concert to celebrate new beginnings. Featuring performances of devotional and Hindustani classical raga music, traditional Kathak dance, a dance drama of Holi, folk dances and more, this show celebrates love and forgiveness. The Srijan Dance Company, founded by Kathak master dancer Abha B. Roy in 2001, has performed at Flushing Town Hall and festival stages throughout New York and the U.S. Apoorva Mudgal Ensemble features the serene vocals of Agra-born (North India) and New York-based Hindustani singer and composer Apoorva Mudgal, arranged to Ria Modak's classical guitar, and Yacouba Sissoko's kora (African Harp) to make for transcendental performances of the Urdu Ghazal, Hindavi folk and Punjabi Sufi Kalaam.

Abha Roy, the artistic director of Srijan Dance Center, and Flushing Town Hall's annual Diwali Festival. A master of Kathak dance, she studied under the guidance of late great Guru Kundan Lal Gangani and attained professional precision under the training of Pt. Durgalal when she completed her specialization in Kathak Kendra, New Delhi. She represented the Indian Council of Cultural Relations and has taught and performed in South America, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago. She has also performed throughout Europe and  venues such as Lincoln Center, Flushing Town Hall, the Queens Museum, NYC Cultural Festival, and many more. She will be joined by musicians Naren Budhakar on Tabla and Gulam Mirasi on harmonium.

The Apoorva Mudgal Ensemble was founded by Apoorva Mudgal, a Hindustani/Sufi singer-songwriter. Her musical expression brings the deepest mysticism of Urdu/Punjabi Sufi poetry, Ghazal and Qawwaali to the stripped down simplicity of an acoustic guitar. It is this silence that breathes meaning to melody, in her soulful voice. She is joined by world musicians, Ria Modak on classical guitar, and Yacouba Sissoko on kora (African Harp).
